SUMMARY:Exhibition: April Open Theme Show\, “This Land is Your Land”
DESCRIPTION:Crossroads Carnegie Art Center is proud to dedicate its April Open Theme Show to “This Land is Your Land” in collaboration with Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center in Union\, Oregon\, who will be offering two purchase awards for $500 each: “Pastoral and Range Landscape” and “The Ranch Lifestyle” awards. \nCrossroads Carnegie Art Center is celebrating America 250\, the 125th year of the research center (the oldest agricultural experiment station in Oregon)\, and the United Nations’ International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists all in one fabulous art exhibit open to all mediums and interpretations of the theme. The show will open First Friday\, April\, 2026\, and run through April 25. All are welcome to submit up to three pieces prior to March 31. We will also offer a people’s choice cash prize and a $100 “Americana” award. DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Blue Book is our state’s official almanac and fact book. Produced by the Oregon State Secretary of State’s Office\, it has been in continuous publication since 1911. Come and see various Blue Books since its debut on display in the Capitol Galleria. \nThe Oregon Blue Book contains listings and​ descriptions of government agencies and educational institutions. It also features an almanac\, maps\, facts about Oregon history and elections\, as well as information on the arts\, media\, and other cultural institutions in Oregon. The print version of the Oregon Blue Book is published during odd-numbered years as required by Oregon statute. \nSpecial Event February 14 \nOn Saturday\, February 14\, State Archives staff will be on hand 10am to 2pm to discuss the Oregon Blue Book and its history. SUMMARY:Exhibit: “Swedish Cabins: The Legacy of Henry Steiner & Fogelbo”
DESCRIPTION:For most Americans\, the log cabin represents the American frontier. The log cabin also tells the story of Swedish immigration and innovation in the United States. In the Pacific Northwest\, the story of the Swedish log cabin lives on through the legacy of craftsman Henry Steiner. In the 1920s through the 1950s\, Steiner and his family built approximately one hundred cabins and other structures. Nordic Northwest has one of these very cabins on its campus: Fogelbo. A National Historic Site\, Fogelbo is a perfect example of the craftsmanship and style of Henry Steiner. \nThis exhibit is one view January 6\, 2026\, through February 5\, 2026\, and was awarded an exhibit sponsorship by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation as part of the Capitol History Gateway Program. \nEvent Accessibility: \n\nAccessible parking\nWheelchair-accessible venue\nService animals welcome

SUMMARY:Exhibit: “The Nez Perce in Oregon: Removal and Return”
DESCRIPTION: The Nez Perce in Oregon: Removal and Return puts the oft-told story of the Nez Perce War and Chief Joseph into national and Oregon context. The Nez Perce today are descendants of tribal peoples living in the Intermountain west for millennia. Recent archeological findings at Coopers Ferry on the Salmon River put human habitation back to 16\,000 years ago; there is a Nez Perce name for the site. The Nez Perce\, who befriended and helped Lewis and Clark on their journey\, had lands taken by treaty and by homesteader encroachment – and finally by war. Nez Perce were subjected to boarding schools\, allotment\, and other assimilationist efforts. But the people are resilient\, and the Nez Perce Wallowa Homeland\, a nonprofit with tribal and local representatives\, has a dance arbor and a Longhouse on 320 acres near the town of Wallowa; Tribal Fisheries is restoring salmon runs in Eastern Oregon; and the Nez Perce Tribe owns land in the Wallowa. \nThis exhibit runs Sept. 29 through Oct. 30 and was one of three exhibits that were awarded Capitol History Gateway exhibit sponsorships in the first year of the program. \nEvent Accessibility: \n\nAccessible parking\nWheelchair-accessible venue

SUMMARY:Special Display of First American Flag Raised in Portland
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Independence Day\, the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) is hosting a special display of what is believed to be the first United States flag raised in Portland after Oregon became the 33rd state. \nThe flag was hand-sewn by Ann Elizabeth Bills in 1861 and is preserved in OHS’s museum collection (OHS Museum\, 61-133). Ann Bills and her husband Cincinnati Bills traveled from Indiana to Oregon in 1853. Cincinnati Bills would serve as Multnomah County Sheriff and start Portland’s first hauling business\, which became the Oregon Transfer Company. \nThe flag was donated to OHS in 1961\, and the accession file notes: \nAs July 4\, 1861\, approached\, Thomas Stafford\, an employee of Mr. Bills\, was anxious to see an American flag raised to celebrate Independence Day. Stafford suggested to Mrs. Bills that she make a flag\, and he assisted her in securing the material. Mr. Stafford and Mr. Bills went to the Sellwood area and cut down a young fir tree\, from which they carved the staff for the flag. Mrs. Bills would later remember\, ‘Flags were not easily secured in those days\, but I saw one was badly needed here\, so I went right to work to supply the want. It was hard work\, but with every stitch I grew more anxious to finish the task I had undertaken.’ The completion and unfurling of the flag was celebrated with a barbecue picnic at Fourth Street\, between Burnside and Ankeny\, and was attended by dozens of people from miles around. \nFollowing this special display\, we will be sending the flag to a textile conservator for important preservation work.
