SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Master Penworks of Tom Stefopoulos: The Hellenic Artist of the Lovejoy Columns”
DESCRIPTION:Athanasios (Tom) Efthimiou Stefopoulos was a factory worker\, railroad man\, commercial artist\, and a champion penman. Art was his first love\, but pursuing this was difficult for a young immigrant in an adopted country where he did not even speak the language. In 1945\, he was employed by the Spokane\, Portland & Seattle Railroad to work as a crossing watchman under the Lovejoy Ramp of the Broadway Bridge in Portland\, Oregon. It was here that the artist created the iconic “Lovejoy Columns.” \nThis exhibition considers the range of Stefopoulos’s art\, from pen drawings to the murals that graced the Lovejoy Columns. Despite a life that was characterized by movement and synthesis\, the Lovejoy Columns represent a sense of belonging to a specific place — in this case\, to Oregon. Stefopoulos’s art gives insight into how the artist envisioned himself in this new home. \nThis exhibit by the Hellenic American Cultural Center and Museum runs May 5\, 2026\, through June 4\, 2026\, and was awarded a sponsorship by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation. \nEvent Accessibility: \n\nAccessible parking\nWheelchair-accessible venue

SUMMARY:First American Flag Raised in Portland
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Independence Day and the America 250 Oregon commemoration\, OHS is hosting a special display of what is believed to be the first United States flag raised in Portland after Oregon became the 33rd state. The flag was hand-sewn by Ann Elizabeth Bills in 1861\, donated to OHS in 1911\, and preserved in our museum collection for more than one hundred years. The flag recently underwent conservation in April 2026 to stabilize this fragile object. \nThis display will also include three historical documents on loan from Bill Leslie. A rare 1774 printing documenting the proceedings of the First Continental Congress reflects the growing movement toward independence\, while two maps from around 1817 illustrate how the young United States envisioned its expanding boundaries and territories. DESCRIPTION:Since Oregon’s founding in 1859\, Jews have participated in public life—building towns and holding office in the nineteenth century\, advocating for civil rights\, immigrant communities\, and social justice in the decades that followed. Drawing from the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education’s collections\, How We Show Up shares the stories of early Jewish mayors who helped establish towns across Oregon\, women who organized networks of social welfare and immigrant support\, and lawyers\, activists\, and community leaders who worked to expand civil rights and democratic participation. The exhibition also examines moments of tension and contradiction\, exploring the limits of acceptance and the complexities of minority politics. DESCRIPTION:One Nation Exhibition brings together contemporary artists who explore the ideals and contradictions embedded in the American promise. Drawing on the national motto E Pluribus Unum\, “Out of Many\, One\,” the exhibition reflects on how a diverse society strives toward unity while confronting social\, political\, and cultural divisions. \nThrough painting\, photography\, sculpture\, textile\, and mixed media\, the artists consider themes central to American civic life: immigration and belonging\, protest and dissent\, labor and economic justice\, religious freedom\, racial inequality\, and democratic ideals. Personal histories and collective memory intersect throughout the exhibition. \nPortraits of leaders and everyday citizens appear alongside symbolic images of journeys\, borders\, and shared responsibility. Together\, these works invite viewers to consider what unites Americans\, what challenges the nation’s commitment to liberty and justice\, and the role individuals and communities play in shaping the country’s future.

Keizur\, the City of Keizer’s namesake\, embodied the city motto of “Pride\, Spirit\, and Volunteerism.” After his family’s arrival to the Oregon Country in 1843\, he quickly became involved and volunteered to make this land a good place to live and work. He participated in the country’s first election\, he devoted his time to help others\, and helped to secure this land for the United States of America (as the British were to take ownership as well).
