SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Yasui Family: An American Story
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Yasui family were among the millions of immigrants who came to the United States seeking new opportunities during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Like many Issei (first-generation Japanese immigrants)\, they experienced racism and oppression; state and federal laws prevented Japanese immigrants from owning land\, and anti-Japanese organizations sought to strip Nisei (second-generation Japanese Americans) of their birthright citizenship. Yet Nikkei (Japanese immigrants and their descendants) like the Yasui family persisted in establishing roots in Oregon\, starting families and businesses\, and shaping the social and economic fabric of the communities where they lived. \nFollowing December 7\, 1941\, when the Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II\, the U.S. government forcibly removed over 110\,000 Nikkei — including U.S. citizens — from their homes and sent them to concentration camps\, often in harsh\, remote areas. After the war\, many members of the Yasui family returned to Oregon\, although some incarcerees chose not to return home due to persistent racism in their communities. \nWhile the Yasui family endured racism and incarceration\, they also shared a commitment to equal justice through engagement with the local\, state\, and national forces that determined — and withheld — their civil rights. DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Supreme Court invites the public to attend free tours of its historic building every Tuesday in July from noon to 1 p.m. Learn about and view Oregon’s oldest continuously operating government building\, where the Oregon Supreme Court first convened on Feb. 14\, 1914  — Oregon’s birthday. \nLocated next to the Oregon State Capitol\, the Supreme Court Building is a striking example of Beaux Arts style with ionic columns\, arched windows\, and a terra cotta exterior. Tours include an inside look at the Supreme Court Courtroom with its domed stained glass canopy ceiling created by the Povey Brothers and lessons about the history of the rule of law and the courts in Oregon. \nRegistration is not required\, but please show up promptly at noon. DESCRIPTION:The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center (NHOTIC)\, with thanks to the James and Marion Miller Foundation\, will host an “Oregon Folklife Residency\,” a 7-month partnership with the Oregon Folklife Network. \nCrossroads Carnegie Art Center\, the friends organization for NHOTIC\, reached out to the Oregon Folklife Network to develop a plan to bring Oregon Cultural Keepers to Eastern Oregon to share their traditions in 2026 as part of the Oregon 250 Celebrations. \nFrom August 13 to August 15\, NHOTIC welcomes Mildred Quaempts (Yakama\, Cayuse)\, who is renowned for her dentalium piece work. Quaempts\, a 2012 Master Artist with the Oregon Folklife Network Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program\, began making shell dresses at age 9 under the guidance of her grandmother. SUMMARY:Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana
DESCRIPTION:Originally a commemoration of the city’s harvest\, Woodburn’s Fiesta Mexicana began in 1963 as an expression of gratitude to the community’s farmworkers. The festival continues as a celebration of the wide variety of Mexican heritage claimed by local residents. Today\, it attracts more than 30\,000 visitors and features authentic Mexican cuisine\, artisan vendors\, informational booths and more. Past Fiesta Mexicana celebrations featured the annual parade\, a highlight of the weekend\, where local cultural organization leaders\, first responders\, and school staffers rode floats through downtown Woodburn and tossed candy to onlookers.
