SUMMARY:Community Conversation: To What Do We Pledge?
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Oregon Humanities and community organizer Wendy Willis\, this conversation will explore what it means to “mutually pledge” ourselves to one another today. \nWhile the opening of the Declaration of Independence gets the fanfare and the fireworks—“When in the course of human events” and all that—the closing clause contains a quiet promise: “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives\, our Fortunes\, and our sacred Honor.” \nWhen we talk about the founding\, we often think of it as a severing from a distant power and a proclamation of individual rights. And yet\, buried in that big individualistic origin story\, there is a pledge of support\, solidarity\, and mutual aid. Today\, as we witness political violence\, hostility\, and polarization\, this conversation invites us to explore what it means for us to be bound to one another and to ask ourselves: is there any idea\, any value\, any dream for the future that we care about enough to tie ourselves to one another to protect or pursue it? \nEvent Accessibility: \n\nWheelchair-accessible venue\nService animals welcome

SUMMARY:The Nisei Paradox: Japanese American Draft Resisters during World War II

SUMMARY:A Nation at 250 & Our Shared Future: A Conversation with Dr. Christopher McKnight Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Join SAGE on October 15 in Portland for an evening of reflection and conversation on the responsibilities of citizenship and the work of strengthening democracy in our communities. \nOur speaker\, historian Dr. Christopher McKnight Nichols of The Ohio State University\, will draw on his deep understanding of American history to explore a central question: Where are we in the arc of American democracy — and what does that mean for how we show up as citizens today? \nTo explore this question\, he will highlight three historical times — periods of challenge and uncertainty — to illuminate how earlier generations of Americans responded in pivotal moments\, and what those experiences may reveal about how we move forward today. He will also reflect on how American democracy has influenced democratic ideals around the world\, and what our current moment may signal beyond our borders. \nThe evening will conclude with a conversation with Dr. Nichols focused on practical ways to build trust\, engage across differences\, and strengthen civic life in our communities. \nNichols reminds us that the strength of the nation has always depended on the actions of its citizens — and that citizenship is not a spectator sport. This event invites each of us to consider how we will show up for one another and help carry the promise of democracy forward. \n

SUMMARY:104th Annual Umatilla County Potato Show
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Umatilla County Potato Show was started in 1922 as a way to show off the variety of crops that could be profitably produced on the land in Umatilla County and to encourage diversification. The Umatilla County Potato Show was started by the Weston Mountain Potato Growers Association. It became an annual event\, with area growers competing for prizes with the many varieties of table and seed potatoes. \nFarming is no longer what it was in 1922\, but the Umatilla County Potato Show continues to be held in October of each year. It still features locally grown produce — both fresh and canned — but has expanded to include a local arts and crafts fair highlighting handiwork such as quilts\, paintings\, photography\, and baked goods. \nEvent Accessibility: \n\nWheelchair-accessible venue\nService animals welcome\nAccessible parking

SUMMARY:Heritage Talk with Elizabeth Mehren
DESCRIPTION:Come to hear stories of the lives of immigrants to Oregon from around the world and the important item they brought with them. \nI Lived to Tell the World presents thirteen inspiring profiles of men and women who have endured unthinkable cruelty\, only to resume productive lives in their new homes in Oregon. They come from Rwanda\, Myanmar\, Bosnia\, Syria\, and more—different stories\, different conflicts\, but similar paths through loss and violence to a new\, not always easy\, life in the United States. \nThe in-depth profiles are drawn from hours of interviews and oral histories. Journalist Elizabeth Mehren worked collaboratively with the survivors to honor the complexity of their experiences and to ensure that the stories are told with\, and not just about\, them. Mehren also weaves in historical\, cultural\, and political context alongside these personal stories of resilience. \nThe general public ticket price is $20; $18 for SAA-members\, and $10 for students. \nEvent Accessibility: \n\nAccessible parking
