A Nation at 250 & Our Shared Future: A Conversation with Dr. Christopher McKnight Nichols

Join SAGE on October 15 in Portland for an evening of reflection and conversation on the responsibilities of citizenship and the work of strengthening democracy in our communities.

Our speaker, historian Dr. Christopher McKnight Nichols of The Ohio State University, will draw on his deep understanding of American history to explore a central question: Where are we in the arc of American democracy — and what does that mean for how we show up as citizens today?

To explore this question, he will highlight three historical times — periods of challenge and uncertainty — to illuminate how earlier generations of Americans responded in pivotal moments, and what those experiences may reveal about how we move forward today. He will also reflect on how American democracy has influenced democratic ideals around the world, and what our current moment may signal beyond our borders.

The evening will conclude with a conversation with Dr. Nichols focused on practical ways to build trust, engage across differences, and strengthen civic life in our communities.

Nichols reminds us that the strength of the nation has always depended on the actions of its citizens — and that citizenship is not a spectator sport. This event invites each of us to consider how we will show up for one another and help carry the promise of democracy forward.
